Maksym Kozub Many years ago, I got quite disappointed when seeing that my country is still very far from the real rule of law, and left my career as a lawyer. However, law has always remained of great interest to me in my translation and interpreting work.

I have done a lot of written legal and corporate translations, including both Ukrainian and foreign laws, companies' articles of association, a thesis in comparative law, etc.

In addition to translating legal stuff and working as an interpreter in legal settings, I often use my legal skills when working for various sorts of clients. For example, World Bank Country Office in Ukraine had a special mission with a focus on Ukrainian mortgage legislation, which I assisted as an interpreter.

Among the long-term projects for which I worked, there has been "Institutional Reforms and Informal Sector", a USAID-funded project back in 1999. Its core activities included participation of US lawyers in the development of the registration system for property titles and pledges in Ukraine, in cooperation with Ukrainian lawyers, parliament members, Ministry of Justice officials, etc. Working as a translator/interpreter for this project, like in many other cases, I had to use my knowledge of both Ukrainian and international law to help people understand the differences between the legal systems, etc.

More recent experience includes e.g. simultaneous interpreting at the series of seminars held for Ukrainian barristers and judges by the American Bar Association / Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (June 2005). The panel included Justice A. Kharchenko (Supreme Court of Ukraine), Judge T. Griffith (United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit), and Judge E. Ludlow (5th District Court, State of Utah). This assignment was arranged by my good colleagues, Serhiy Syzenko and Serhiy Kolesnyk, who are always a pleasure to work with (and performed with the latter).
